The Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) is an All-India examination administered and conducted in eight zones across the country by the GATE Committee comprising of Faculty members from IISc, Bangalore and other seven IIT’s on behalf of the National Coordinating Board, Department of Education, Ministry of Human Resources Development. The GATE score/rank is used for admissions to Post Graduate Programmes (ME, M.Tech, MS, Direct Ph.D.) in institutes like IITs and IISc etc with financial assistance offered by MHRD. PSUs too use the GATE scores for recruiting candidates for various prestigious jobs with attractive remuneration.
Candidates are expected to appear in a paper appropriate to the discipline of their qualifying degree. However, candidates are free to choose any paper according to their admission plan, keeping in mind the eligibility criteria of the institutions in which they wish to seek admission. For more details regarding the admission criteria in any particular institute, candidates are advised to refer to the websites of that particular institute.

The Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) is conducted by IIT’s & IISc for the PG admissions to Engineering/ Technology/ Architecture and Science programs offered at the IITs, NITs and other leading centrally funded institutes in addition to many state universities as well as private universities. GATE is completely online starting with the application process to the tests and the download of the score card. An increasing number of PSUs will be using the GATE scores for recruitment. GATE exam, students having B.E./B.Tech. Degree or in the final year of these courses opt for this exam for doing M.Tech, M.S or PhD from some renowned institute like IIT’s. GATE score card is valid for two years and in this mean time you can apply for other engineering colleges for M.E./M.Tech. Programs. GATE is conducted each year and any one of the IIT’s or IISc conducts such exam. This is graduate level exam which is more knowledge and conceptual based exam. This requires quite a better understanding of a subject to solve GATE questions. GATE is the difficult exam because it is having some holistic approach. GATE questions require you to apply many concepts in a single problem. You should have good problem-solving capabilities for that.
PSU stands for Public Sector Undertakings. They basically are the companies in which government of India is the major stakeholder. These companies conducts exam to recruit engineers every year. This exam is called PSU Exam. Qualifying in GATE has become a basic requirement for engineers to land in a government job in sought-after PSUs. Besides GATE qualification, group discussion and personal interview are also conducted in some PSUs for recruitment. PSU Recruitment through GATE commenced in 2012 and since then, the number of recruiting companies is steadily increasing. Year 2015 witnessed 27 plus companies recruiting through GATE 2015, whereas the number grew to more than 40 in 2016. Candidate can enter into PSU’s with the help of GATE score but nowadays many PSU’s are also conducting their own written exam for their recruitment. GATE score card will also help you to get more opportunities in government jobs. Remember that there are more than 100 Public Sector Undertakings in India. Each PSU conducts the entrance exam separately. In the job notification which each company publishes, you can check the exam and admission form dates at the same time you can check whether there are any vacancies for the branch in which you have completed B.Tech. In case there aren’t any vacancies then you cannot apply for the exam.
